Clock-Out Time Calculator

"If I clocked in at 9 and work 8 hours with a 30-minute lunch, when do I leave?" Enter your times below, the answer updates instantly.

Your clock-out time

5:30 PM

Clock-out = clock-in + hours worked + unpaid break time. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Working out what time you clock out

Add your paid hours to your clock-in time, then add every unpaid minute on top. Clock in at 9:00 AM for an eight-hour day with a 30-minute unpaid lunch and you leave at 5:30 PM. The half hour is not part of the eight, so it lands on the end of the day rather than inside it.

That last point is where most of the confusion comes from. People add eight hours to nine and get five, then wonder why the schedule says half past. The break is unpaid, so it does not count toward the hours you owe, so the day has to run longer to fit it in.

When the break is paid, nothing moves

A short rest break, roughly twenty minutes or less, is hours worked under federal rules and stays on the clock whether or not anyone punched out for it. Clock in at nine, work eight hours with two paid fifteen-minute breaks, and you still finish at five. Only a genuine meal break, thirty minutes or more with you fully relieved of duty, pushes the end of the day out. Meal and rest break laws by state says which states require one at all.

Eight hours from now, and overnight shifts

Starting at 10:00 PM and working eight hours puts you out at 6:00 AM. Subtracting clock times across midnight gives a negative answer, so add 24 hours whenever the finish is earlier than the start. The calculator above does it for you; the arithmetic is worth knowing because a paper time card will not.

Leaving on time and being paid for it are different questions

Knowing your clock-out time tells you when to leave. It does not tell you what you are owed if you stay past it. Anything over 40 hours in a workweek carries the overtime premium, and a few states add a daily threshold on top, so a long day can cost the employer time and a half even in a short week.

For the whole week rather than one shift, the time card calculator totals seven days with breaks deducted, and the overtime calculator prices the premium once you have the hours.

Frequently asked questions

What time do I clock out if I clock in at 9 and work 8 hours?
5:00 PM if your breaks are paid, and 5:30 PM if you take a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Unpaid time does not count toward the eight hours, so it pushes the end of the day out rather than fitting inside it.
Does a lunch break change my clock-out time?
Only if it is unpaid. A meal break of 30 minutes or more where you are fully relieved of duty is normally unpaid, so it is added to the end of your day. A short rest break of roughly 20 minutes or less counts as hours worked under federal rules and changes nothing.
How do I work out an overnight shift?
Add 24 hours whenever the finish time is earlier than the start. A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is eight hours, even though subtracting the clock times gives minus sixteen.
What time is 8 hours from now?
Add eight to the current hour and keep the minutes. At 7:45 AM you finish at 3:45 PM with paid breaks, or 4:15 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The calculator above takes the break into account for you.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, with no account and nothing to install. Kloqk's time clock itself is also free for unlimited employees if you want punches recorded rather than worked out by hand.
