What a clock in and out app does
Employees tap in when they start and out when they finish, and the app timestamps each punch and totals the day. That is the visible part. The part that determines whether it is worth having is what happens to those punches: whether breaks come out correctly, whether overtime is split at the right threshold, and whether the total exports in a form payroll accepts without anyone retyping it.
Shared device or personal phone
A shared tablet at the entrance means one device for the whole team, nothing installed on anyone's personal phone, and no assumption that every employee owns a smartphone. It suits a fixed location: a counter, a kitchen, a shop floor. The kiosk covers that setup.
Punching from a personal phone suits people who are not at a fixed site, which is most trades and field work. The trade-off is that a phone can punch from anywhere, so the punch on its own does not tell you where somebody was. That is what geofencing addresses, and it is Premium at $59 per location.
Is there a genuinely free clock in and out app?
Yes, with the same caveat as always: check what free is bounded by. The three common shapes are a headcount cap, a missing payroll export, and a trial with an end date. Any of them can be fine; none of them are fine if you discover the boundary after moving thirty people onto the product.
Kloqk's clock in and out app is free for unlimited employees at one location. That includes kiosk and mobile punching, a photo on every punch, automatic overtime and break calculation, and payroll-ready exports. There is no per-seat fee on it, which is the part that usually changes as a team grows.
Missed punches, which will happen
Somebody will forget to clock out. What matters is that the correction is possible and visible: a manager edits the entry, the original value and the change are both retained, and the timesheet shows that an edit occurred. An app that silently overwrites is worse than a paper sheet, because it looks authoritative and is not.
To check a week by hand, or to verify what an app is telling you, the time card calculator totals seven days with breaks deducted, and the decimal hours converter handles the minutes-to-decimal step payroll needs.
