Questions people ask about this
How does pto accrual work?
The common design earns leave in proportion to hours worked, often around one hour for every 30 worked, with a cap on the balance and a rule about carrying it into the next year. The alternative is an annual grant on a set date. Accrual suits variable-hours staff because it scales with what they actually work; a grant is simpler for salaried teams.
Do companies have to pay out pto when you quit?
No federal law requires it, and several states do. Where earned PTO is treated as wages, a policy saying it is forfeited on resignation generally does not survive; where it is not, your written policy governs. This is one of the widest gaps between states, so check the rule for yours before writing the handbook clause.
How much pto is normal for small business?
Ten to fifteen days of combined paid time off in the first year is the common range for US small businesses, often rising with tenure. What matters more than the number is whether it is stated clearly, accrues predictably, and is tracked somewhere both sides can see, because most PTO disputes are about the balance rather than the policy.
How do I track employee time off?
Track requests and balances in the same system that holds the hours, so accrual is calculated from actual hours worked rather than estimated. A spreadsheet works until two people edit it, at which point the balance becomes unprovable, and an unprovable balance is generally resolved in the employee's favour. Kloqk's time-off tracking is on Pro at $29 per location.
