Converting a salary to an hourly rate

Divide the annual salary by 2,080, which is 40 hours a week across 52 weeks. A $52,000 salary is $25.00 an hour; $60,000 is $28.85; $45,000 is $21.63. To go the other way, multiply the hourly rate by 2,080: $20 an hour is $41,600 a year.

The 2,080 figure assumes a full year with no unpaid time off. If the role is 37.5 hours a week the divisor is 1,950, and part-time roles need their own. Paid holidays and PTO do not change the divisor, because they are paid; unpaid leave does.

Why the conversion matters for exempt status

Being salaried does not make somebody exempt from overtime. The role has to clear a salary threshold and satisfy a duties test, and a salary that looks comfortable annually can sit below the threshold once converted. Running the conversion is often the first sign that somebody has been misclassified, which matters because the liability accrues on every week they worked over 40. The state you are in changes the answer

The arithmetic is the same everywhere, but what the resulting rate has to clear is not. State minimum wages range from the federal $7.25 to well over $16, and several states set their own exempt-salary thresholds above the federal one. A rate that is comfortably legal in one state can be below the floor across a border.
