Phone location permissions: iPhone and Android

Help a crew member turn on location for Kloqk in iPhone Safari, Android Chrome or Samsung Internet, including precise location.

When someone punches from their phone, Kloqk asks the phone where it is. If location is blocked, the punch is saved without a location (or refused, if your business blocks punches outside job sites). The fix is a setting on the phone, and the steps below are the same ones the employee sees on their own clock page.

Check what the phone is sharing

  1. The employee signs in on their phone and opens the clock.
  2. Under Your location, they tap Show my location.
  3. It shows Inside a job site, Not at a job site with the distance to the nearest one, or Location found, plus how accurate the fix is.

Location is read only when they punch or tap Show my location, never in between.

iPhone (Safari)

  1. Tap aA in the address bar, then Website Settings, then set Location to Allow.
  2. Still nothing? Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services. Make sure it is on, then tap Safari Websites and choose While Using the App.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Tap the icon to the left of the web address, then Permissions, then Location, and choose Allow.
  2. Check that Location is on in the phone's quick settings (swipe down from the top of the screen).
  3. Android has a second switch for Chrome itself. If Chrome is not allowed, the website is never asked: open Settings, Apps, Chrome, Permissions, Location, choose Allow only while using the app, and turn on Use precise location.

Samsung Internet

  1. Tap the lock icon next to the web address, then Permissions, and allow Location.
  2. Also check Settings, Apps, Samsung Internet, Permissions, Location.

Precise vs approximate location

Newer iPhones and Android phones can share an approximate location, which is blurred by a kilometer or more on purpose. That is too rough to tell which job site someone is at. When the fix is that rough, the clock says the phone is sharing an approximate location and how to fix it:

  • iPhone: Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Safari Websites, then turn on Precise Location.
  • Android: Settings, Apps, Chrome, Permissions, Location, then turn on Use precise location.

A fix that is only a little rough usually just needs a better signal: step outside, or turn on Wi-Fi.

After changing the setting

The phone will not ask again on its own once location was refused. After changing the setting, tap Try again under Your location, or reload the page.

Good to know

  • If your business records and flags off-site punches, a punch without location still counts. It shows as having no location, and managers see it under Phone punches with no location on the Job Sites page.
  • If your business blocks punches outside job sites, a punch without location is refused, with a message saying how to turn location on.
  • Location only works over a secure (https) connection, which your Kloqk address always is.
  • "Your phone could not find its location" means the setting is fine but there is no fix yet. Step outside or near a window and try again.

Questions people ask

Does Kloqk track my employees all day?

No. Location is read only at the moment they punch or tap Show my location, never in between.

The phone never asks for location. Why?

Once location has been refused, the phone will not ask again on its own. On Android, Chrome itself may also be blocked in the phone's app settings. Follow the steps above, then tap Try again.

Why does it say the location is approximate?

The phone is set to share an approximate location. Turn on Precise Location (iPhone) or Use precise location (Android) for the browser.

Can my employee still clock in without location?

If your business records and flags off-site punches, yes; the punch shows no location. If it blocks them, no.
