How does gps time tracking work?
The employee's phone reports its location at the moment they punch, and that coordinate is stored with the time entry. It is a snapshot at the punch, not a continuous track, which is both the privacy answer and the practical one: it tells you the punch happened at the job site without following anyone around. Can my employer track my location while clocked in?
In most US states an employer may collect location data on a company device or with the employee's consent, and several states require that consent to be explicit and in writing. The narrower and better-defended approach is to capture location only at the punch rather than continuously, and to say so in the handbook. Tracking someone off the clock is a different matter and attracts real legal risk.

When it is switched on, an employee can only clock in while inside that radius, so a punch from a car three miles away is refused rather than quietly recorded.
